****$5 of each sale will go to Liberty Hill Save Our Stars to promote curbing light pollution in Liberty Hill, Tx. Thank you****

Light Pollution has a way of sneaking up on us. We don’t realize what we’re not seeing anymore when we turn the lights on. We think that “security lights” prevent crime, but that’s untrue. It just helps the criminals find what they want easier! Think about it…. if a normally dark garage has a motion sensing light go on in the middle of the night, it’s more likely to draw attention than a light that’s on all the time.

Most of us moved to our little town to get away from the big city lights, crime, noise, and pollution to slow down and appreciate the mom and pop shops that are closed on Sundays, dusty dirt roads, and dark nights filled with chirping cicadas, flashing lightning bugs, and immense dark skies of constellations, galaxies, shooting stars, bright planets, and our stunning Milky Way. We don’t blame people for moving here, we choose to live here, too! But we don’t want to see the lifestyle we love so much disappear due to flashing neon business signs, street lamps, and the glaring all-night lights that make your eyeballs bleed. The critters don’t like those lights much either. The lightning bugs can’t find each other to make baby lightning bugs, the migrating birds are all kinds of confused, the bats are declining, too.

Don’t be afraid of the dark. When city folk move to the country, they look around and they start to feel a little bit of a panic. They’re just not used to the dark! But guess what… what they’re used to – lights on all night long – is not natural. At nighttime, it’s supposed to be dark! We know you’re nervous that your what-have-you will get stolen. We’ve got a couple solutions for you. Get a dog. We love our dogs in the country! Lock your car, or at least don’t leave valuables in there. And if you must, put up a motion sensing/detecting light, that is correctly aimed and shaded from bleeding light upward where it’s not going to do any good anyway. You can even install a motion sensing, infrared camera to catch whoever you’re worried about. Those don’t even need light! And you’ll see a whole bunch of friendly nighttime visitors on that camera, too. Racoons, deer, armadillo, skunks… you know, the locals.

You can help be a great new neighbor by getting educated about what kind of lights are “dark sky friendly” before putting up outdoor lights. There’s a lot of waste, both in the light spillage and your $$$, so if you need outdoor lights, learn what lights to choose and how to focus that lighting to do the best good and the least harm. Help spread the word about light pollution and the simple steps we can all take to preserve our enjoyment of the country. Get involved, we need you! Join our group on Facebook: Liberty Hill Save Our Stars (Dark Skies). Finally, the easiest thing we can all do to combat light pollution is just turn your outdoor lights off between 11 pm and 6 am.

Thanks, and welcome to the country.
